Smart City Services – Fiber Optic Herndon
In June 2018, the town entered into a Pilot Project Agreement with Vivacity DC, Inc. to explore and evaluate the impact of smart city technologies and services through the installation of remote-controlled LED lights equipped with radio communications and Internet-of-Things (IoT) sensor equipment in downtown Herndon.
Under the agreement, the pilot project included the replacement of 10 existing streetlight poles with LED smart poles and two additional streetlight LED smart poles. The enhancements enabled the remote monitoring and management system for the new streetlights; provided a public Wi-Fi network downtown; an electric vehicle charging station and IoT sensors for other smart city services.
